Water has long been associated in many cultures with life, peace, struggle, and the divine. From the folk hymn “Peace Like a River” to the African-American spiritual “Wade in the Water,” Ensign will explore the deep expressions that water evokes. “Let the River Run” and “Down By the Riverside” show the more joyful and playful side of rivers, and Wilberg’s beloved arrangement of “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” will close the concert with its inspiring swells.
Children anticipate Christmas with expectations of shiny gifts full of toys. But the deepest joy of the season comes as we remember God’s greatest gift to the world and follow His example of love by serving and giving to others. Many carols through the ages have expressed this truth with familiar tunes like “Good King Wenceslas” whose reign exemplified service and sacrifice, “We Three Kings” whose gifts honored the newborn King, and many others.
Join the Ensign Symphony and Chorus as we continue the Easter tradition of celebrating with rich music the event that has inspired millennia of faith, art, and music for billions. From expressions of grief to joyful “Alleluias,” Ensign will perform overtures, anthems, and choruses spanning generations of composers exploring the spectrum of human responses to Christ’s Passion and Resurrection, from grief, to hope, to joy.
As children, we occasionally or often enjoyed the simple and sometimes silly joys of childhood. Ensign pays tribute to these joys with Debussy’s Children’s Corner and fun, though complex, variations of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Our journey will then go through love songs by Eric Whitacre, and songs of our nostalgia for home that express the experience of maturing. We finish with faith-filled songs of the Family that we all belong to.
