Second Violin
Gennady Filimonov has been a member of the Seattle Symphony Second Violin section (fourth chair) since 1994. Filimonov is a co-founding member of the Opus One Chamber Ensemble in New York City and was a co-founding member of the ODEONQUARTET. He was previously a member of the New York Chamber Symphony at the 92nd St. Y, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra at Lincoln Center, Musica Sacra, New York Symphonic Ensemble, Manhattan Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra and Waterloo Festival Orchestra. His deep commitment to chamber music has led to performances throughout the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asia. He has participated in many festivals, including Classical Tahoe Music Festival.
He received his Bachelor’s and Master of Music degrees from Manhattan School of Music, and has won numerous competitions and prizes, including recieving the prestigious Fulbright Grant to pursue an Advanced Solo Studies Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. A highly sought-after musician, Filimonov has been soloist/concertmaster in collaboration with Rod Stewart, Linda Rondstatt, Tony Bennett, Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Heart and many others. His film appearances include the award-winning motion picture FAME and the premiere episode of The Equalizer. He is also a prolific studio recording artist. To date, he has performed on over 850 albums, including Heart’s The Road Home and Dave Matthews Band’s Some Devil. Filimonov’s former teachers include Aaron Rosand, Yfrah Neaman, Burton Kaplan, Stanley Bednar and Koichiro Harada (formerly of Tokyo String Quartet).
Filimov is also a highly sought-after historian, expert and appraiser of fine instruments and bows, a frequent contributing writer to The Strad magazine and Tarisio Carteggio, and has published a book about one of the greatest 20th century French bowmakers, Sartory and the Case of Spurious Bows, which relates the untold story of Sartory's battles against trademark infringement in America.
