Viola
Wes Dyring (Deer-ing) joined the Seattle Symphony viola section in 1986, after serving as principal violist and soloist with the Orquesta Filarmónica of Santiago, Chile. He has also been a member of the Columbus Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic and Aspen Festival orchestras.
Besides his symphonic playing, Dyring is a teacher, arranger, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist and producer, under the auspices of Dyring Music, LLC.
He loves playing acoustic and electro-acoustic viola, violin and guitars in performances and recordings of his arrangements that uplift and express the beauty of the diversity of humanity and promote interracial and intercultural understanding and collaboration.
Dyring is fluent in Spanish as well as his native English, and belongs to a diverse and international family. His Colombian wife Luz Marina is an industrial engineer and trilingual math instructor, and their son Alex is an active bassist in the New York music scene, focusing on musical styles from the African diaspora.
Holding a Master of Music and Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Michigan State University, Dyring studied and coached with Francis Tursi, Karen Tuttle, Jan DeGaetani, Frank Glazer and Lyman Bodman.
In addition to his musical life, Dyring is an active member of the Bahá’í Faith. He enjoys practicing Olympic recurve archery, gaining insights for his playing and teaching in its synergy with the workings of stringed instruments. He especially loves to create expressive English translations of Spanish prose and poetry.
